Please join artist Billy Friebele and Civilian Art Projects for "Walking As Drawing" followed by a talk with the artist about the project and his exhibition "New Loops" on view until July 23, 2011.

"Walking As Drawing" will involve participants in a mapping excursion that will result in a collective time-based drawing. Using the boundary of the surrounding blocks of the gallery, participants will walk anywhere within the contained space for exactly 30 minutes, thinking of the path as a drawn line.

I have been a resident of DC and a member of the Metropolitan Police Department for the past 25 years. As a resident of Ward 5, with a son at Gonzaga College High School, I have a strong commitment to the District of Columbia, both personally and professionally.

During my career with the MPD, I have served in a variety of assignments. Most recently, I spent the past two years as Inspector in the First District, where, in 2010, we were recipients of the Crime Reduction Award. Before that, I was Inspector in the School Security Division, Captain in the Fourth District, and a Captain in the Internal Affairs Division.

In my career, I have worked in the First, Third, Fourth, Fifth and Seventh Police Districts, as well as the Criminal Investigations Division. I plan on taking the lessons I’ve learned in my past positions to provide professional and dedicated services to the residents of the Second District.

I look forward to serving in this exciting new capacity.

FAB LAB DC wins first AWESOME Foundation DC award

After reviewing over 70 applications and with much passionate discussion, the DC Awesome Foundation board came to a completely unanimous agreement for the winner of the first Awesome Foundation DC grant.

So what is this Fab Lab and why is it AWESOME?

Phyllis Klein, the powerhouse behind the application, is currently operating a mobile Fab Lab over on 14th St. The Awesome Foundation grant is going to help her activate their new bricks and mortar space on North Capitol Street, NW. Here’s her proposal for an awesome grant:

In the spirit of MIT’s Fab Lab community outreach project, Fab Lab DC will create a high-tech, fabrication laboratory/community workshop in the heart of the Nation’s Capital to advance creativity, innovation, and collaborative projects. Fab Lab DC will serve and foster the creative community by providing access to digital fabrication technology, rapid prototyping, and the global Fab Lab network.
Fab Labs enable people to use technology to create, experiment and produce, shifting the paradigm away from people merely “consuming” technology toward using technology to create solutions.

With a focus on life-long learning and emphasis on investigative teamwork, Fab Lab DC plans to provide a range of educational programs for people of all ages, including access to the international Fab Lab network and Fab Academy, which extend opportunities for information sharing, research, and broader social impact.
Fab Lab is for local community members, life-long learners, inventors, entrepreneurs, creatives, and professionals.

With its location within view and walking distance of the U. S. Capitol Building, Fab Lab DC will also serve as a model for the nation’s leaders in policy, government, and industry, to experience, first hand, Fab Lab’s proven grass-roots approach in developing technical education and literacy, promoting innovation, launching inventions, and incubating new businesses.

If you would like to get involved, your support, in the form of monetary donations, supplies, and sponsorships, is warmly welcomed. The 2011 Call to Artists is open to all artists residing in Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, DC over the age of 18 for original artwork only. This call will cover exhibits in the gallery from October 2011 through August 2012. An exhibit may include on applicant or a combination of applicants, based on the judgement of jurors. The jury panel is comprised of Kathleen Moran, Lenny Campello, and Jack Rasmussen.
How to Apply 1. Complete the entry form.

2. Enclose the entry fee of $35 in the form of a check or money order payable to BlackRock Center for the Arts (no cash or credit cards accepted).

3. Create a CD with 5 images .Write your name, address and telephone number directly on the CD. Burn the CD for playing on a PC in a “JPEG” format at 72 dpi, approximately 1200 X 1800 pixels. Images should be labeled with the first word of the title, e. g., images of artwork titled “Promises” should be labeled promises.jpeg .Only CD entries will be accepted (no email entries accepted).

4. Create a bio/resume and price list that includes the name, medium, and size of each entry in the same order as the images appearing on the CD. Group applications must include a statement on how the works are selected by the group to ensure quality of works submitted.

5. Mail or deliver packet by October 30, 2010.

This summer, The Urban Forest Project DC will plant 100 street banners about the environment by local artists, designers and students in downtown Washington, DC.

Each banner uses the form of or metaphor for the tree to make a powerful visual statement about the environment. Together, they create a forest of thoughtful images in the Nation's Capital.

Urban Forest Project banners will be hung on prominent city light poles this summer, launching in the Downtown DC BID for two months. They will then be recycled into unique tote bags designed exclusively for the project and sold online. Proceeds will be used to improve District of Columbia neighborhoods one tree at a time.

Before the banners are displayed in the street, a preview exhibition will be held at the Corcoran Gallery of Art through May 9th from 10am - 5pm, at The Corcoran's Gallery 31, (enter at New York Avenue) 500 17th St. NW Washington, DC. This will be an opportunity for you to view the winning banners created by professional designers and artists, along with student work from the Corcoran College of Art + Design and AIGA DC's mentoring teams. IT'S FREE!

The Urban Forest Project DC is being presented by the District Department of Transportation and Worldstudio in collaboration with AIGA DC, DC Commission of the Arts and Humanities, Corcoran College of Art + Design and the Downtown DC BID. Our Third Annual Cellular Photography Exhibition is coming soon! Last year we had over 220 images submitted and a busy night at the opening. Click here to see last year’s photographs cellular photography 2009.
Grab your camera phone (or a friend’s!) and hunt down that favorite image or go create something brand new, it is time to pull these wonderful images out of the shadows and up onto the walls of our gallery.
Send in an image and enjoy joining friends and patrons for an unforgettable evening.
The night of the show, each photograph will be offered for only $1.00 and folks will be able to purchase the work off the wall as they wish when the event comes to a close! Come early to claim your favorite picture(s).
Because of the community-oriented nature of the venue, entries should be from DC Metro area residents or friends of the ArtSpace that have images and connections to the District. This show will be viewed by youth members of the ArtSpace and the greater community, therefore entries need to be edited accordingly. This is a ONE NIGHT ONLY event and is going to be an energizing experience for all who participate. Please review the attached legalese fine print below before submitting images!

Sometime this spring, The Urban Forest Project, a global public arts and environmental initiative, is scheduled to plant 100 street banners designed by 100 local designers and students in the downtown Washington DC. The DC project incorporates artwork from local area designers, artists and students. Not only will many AIGA members be showcased in the project, members were also responsible for mentoring high school students to create a portion of the banners. Once the banners come down, they will be re-purposed into product that will be sold with proceeds going to actual expansion of the urban forest in the District.

Originally, the project partners (Worldstudio, DDOT, Downtown DC BID, AIGA and the Commission on the Arts and Humanities) had hoped to have the banners up in April. That date has been delayed until at least May as the project still needs additional funding in order to move forward. All the partners are committed to the project and working hard to secure necessary funding so please stay tuned for more information.

On another note, the Corcoran Gallery 31 has decided to showcase and celebrate the work by previewing it to the community on Thursday, May 6. Replicas of the banners and the U.F.P. video that was generated in February will be featured. Have you ever pondered how the olfactory sense affects visual perception, or how a scent can evoke a dormant childhood memory? In this unconventional exhibition international curator, art critic and clinical allergist, Kóan Jeff Baysa, MD, asks artists and fragrance researchers to explore how the physical self experiences and knows the world through the sense of smell. Some artists, using aromatic oils and fragrances, transform the traditional gallery into an olfactory lab; others use visuals to invoke olfactory stimuli. Visitors will experience the connection between physical health and visual, gustatory, and olfactory aesthetics.

District of Columbia Adds DC Circulator to Google Transit

Google Trip Planning Site to Include Data on Popular Downtown DC Bus

WASHINGTON, DC - Today District of Columbia Mayor Adrian M. Fenty, District Department of Transportation (DDOT) Director Gabe Klein, and District Chief Technology Officer (CTO) Bryan Sivak announced that the District has agreed with Google to place data on the District’s DC Circulator bus on the Google Transit site.

Google Transit is a site designed to allow visitors to plan trips using public transit—buses, subways, trolleys, etc. More than 444 jurisdictions and public transit authorities nationwide have placed their transit information on the site.

The DC Circulator bus is an initiative launched in 2005 by the District of Columbia, the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), and Surface Transportation, with support from the Downtown Business Improvement District. Its purpose is to increase transit options and reduce congestion in the city's downtown core. The District's downtown is home to numerous government buildings, museums, tourist attractions, restaurants, entertainment venues, hotels, and shopping sites. In recent years, it has seen rapidly growing traffic from residents and visitors alike.

The Circulator has five routes connecting through the District's downtown. Circulator buses arrive at stops every 10 minutes throughout the day. The 43 colorful buses have low floors, multiple doors for easy entry and exit, and large windows for easy viewing along the route. The Circulator costs only $1 per ride, with substantial senior and student discounts and discounted Metro transfer fares. Travelers can hop on the bus and pay cash or buy tickets in advance online or at curbside parking meters. A "Where's My Bus?" mobile GPS application developed by the District Office of the Chief Technology Officer (OCTO) allows riders to quickly find out how close the next bus is.

The convenient routes, low fares, and attractive, comfortable buses have made the DC Circulator a highly popular transit option in downtown DC. The Circulator has transported more than 8 million workers, residents and visitors since its inception.

As a result of the agreement between the District and Google, DC Circulator riders will now be able to plan their DC Circulator trips in advance using Google Transit.

"Our vibrant District downtown contains key business venues and offers every urban cultural or recreational activity anyone could want," said Mayor Fenty. "The Circulator will take you anywhere in downtown DC you want to go-and now, with our data on Google Transit, you can plan it all in advance."

"The DC Circulator has been a great success helping residents and visitors get around and reducing traffic in downtown DC," said DDOT Director Klein. "With Google Transit, we can make it even more successful."

"From our perspective, technology is all about making life and work easier and more convenient for everyone," said CTO Sivak. "By linking the DC circulator to Google Transit, we're making getting to work and play faster and easier for everyone."

DEADLINE: March 15th. Submissions after March 15th will also be accepted, but given the timeliness of the situation, we strongly encourage designers to meet this deadline.
Posters should be specific to the earthquake in Haiti or THE HAITI POSTER PROJECT.
The posters may be graphic or typographic.
The posters should be signed and numbered editions in quantities of 25 to 100. The posters should not be one-offs.
Minimum size is 11” x 17”. (Ideal size: 18” x 24”.) Poster can be produced by litho, digital or silk-screen print.
Posters may include credits for vendors who have donated supplies or services, but please keep them small and unobtrusive.
Artists will be responsible for designing, printing, and delivering the posters to HAITI POSTER PROJECT. Although we would like to print them, we don’t have the resources to coordinate all of the printing ourselves.
We encourage international submissions.
All submissions will become property of THE HAITI POSTER PROJECT, and will be sold to raise funds for the Doctors Without Borders earthquake disaster relief effort. Several posters from each donated set will be retained for possible future exhibition or publication.

St. Andrew's Teacher Featured in Washington Post for Work With Bokamoso Youth

Roy Barber, a performing arts teacher at St. Andrew's Episcopal School, was featured in the Thursday, January 21 issue of the Washington Post for his work with the Bokamoso Youth Program, a program to help disadvantaged young people from Winterveld, South Africa.

Barber, a Washington, D.C., resident who has taught at St. Andrew's for 22 years, began traveling to South Africa in the early '90s to work with impoverished youth in Winterveld, a city of about 1 million people north of Pretoria.

In his work with South African youths, Barber uses theatre and music to tackle difficult issues such as AIDS, justice, poverty and racism. His work with Bokamoso has seen him travel to South Africa dozens of times. The group works with more than 100 youngsters every year – providing life skills, training, educational opportunities and scholarships. In 2002, he used the inheritance left to him by his mother, a Civil Rights activist, to fund the Bokamoso group's first visit to the U.S.

Every year since, a small delegation of students from the center in Winterveld visits America, with St. Andrew's as its unofficial base for their month-long stay. During St. Andrew's Spring Break, the school sends a group of students to South Africa to learn about the youth program and work and help those less fortunate living a continent away.

"I'm so inspired by these young people," Barber told John Kelly, the columnist who profiled him in The Post. "They're so much more interesting than I am."

St. Andrew's will host a free, public concert featuring the Bokamoso Youth on January 31 at its Postoak Campus (8804 Postoak Road Potomac, Md.). The event, starting at 2 p.m., will be held in MacDonald Hall and will also feature a dance workshop following the Bokamoso performance.

National Poster Contest is Underway

DC Public and Charter School Fifth Graders Urged to Participate

(Washington, D.C.) The experts spend a lot of time trying to quantify the benefits of trees, but given nothing more than some crayons or markers, some children can make them pretty clear. The annual Arbor Day National Poster Contest produces some great artwork that highlights the importance of trees in communities across the country, including the District.

The theme of this year’s contest is “Trees are Terrific... and Energy Wise!” and highlights the energy trees produce and conserve. Approximately 1.2 million fifth graders from over 63,000 classrooms across the country are expected to take part in this free event that provides an engaging and impactful opportunity to teach students about the role trees play in the world.

341 District DCPS students participated in the 2009 contest. The 1^st Place winner in the city was 5^th grader Nada Eldisoky at Francis Stevens Education Campus in Northwest DC. Her poster, pictured here, vividly illustrates the benefits of trees in an urban environment.

Hoping for even more participation this year, the District Department of Transportation’s Urban Forestry Administration (UFA) is providing savings bonds and Nationals tickets to the first, second, and third place public and charter school participants in the District. UFA will also plant a tree at every school that has at least 25 poster submissions.

The winning contestant nationally receives a $1,000 savings bond, a trip to the national awards ceremony in Nebraska City (home of Arbor Day), his or her artwork framed, and lifetime membership in the Arbor Day Foundation, amongst other prizes. The student’s teacher is awarded $200.

The mission of the Urban Forestry Administration is to establish a full population of street trees within the District and to ensure that those trees are maintained in a healthy and safe condition. WPA is pleased to present its second installment of Information Exchange, a professional development program for artists organized by WPA with the International Studio and Curatorial Program in Brooklyn, NY. WPA will bring international curators to Washington to discuss ideas and projects in a public forum, followed by a day of one-on-one critiques or portfolio reviews with WPA member artists. The goal of the program is to expose artists and curators to each other’s work, spurring new and continuing conversations, ideas, relationships, and projects which will carry on long after the initial exchange.

Chiara Sartori is an independent visual arts curator, currently in residence at the International Studio & Curatorial Program. She holds a degree in Sociology and she attended the MA Program in Visual Contemporary Arts at Castello di Rivoli - Contemporary Art Museum, Turin. Sartori has worked as assistant curator, co-curator and curator on projects at several venues including the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Arts (UK), and Galleria Contemporaneo - Public Art Space (Italy). She recently worked on both national participations and collateral events of the 53th Venice Biennial and curated the first solo exhibition in Italy by the American artist Jeremiah Day. She is a regular contributor to Arte e Critica and DROME Magazine (Rome).

Chiara’s public talk will take place at WPA on Thursday, January 21, from 6 – 7:30pm at 2023 Massachusetts Ave., NW.

Wildlife on 14th Street NW this morning...

This morning, three men were seen chasing a young deer into the fenced parking lot at 1912 14th Street, NW. The frightened animal ran against the small attendant's shelter and into the fence in the lot. A neighbor, Alex Mayer, who witnessed the incident, contacted the MPD and Animal Control. Early morning customers of the parking lot were diverted by police, who blocked the entrance to keep people out and the deer contained while they awaited Animal Control representatives. The deer huddled in the corner of the lot (pictured left). Animal Control was able to sedate the deer and transport it to a shelter to assess its health and any injuries and determine if the deer could be re-released.

Be Inspired- Remaining Schedule Solar Decathlon on the National Mall

The Solar Decathlon is an inspiring sampling of innovative architectural design and engineering. Twenty teams are competing in the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon 2009, which is taking place now on the National Mall:

-Oct. 8-16—Teams compete in 10 contests
-Oct. 9-13 and 15-18—Houses are open to the public
-Oct. 19-21—Teams disassemble their houses

The Solar Decathlon is an international collegiate competition in which student teams compete to design, build, and operate highly energy-efficient, completely solar-powered houses. For the 2009 event, teams will be awarded $100,000 over two years to support the Solar Decathlon's research goal of reducing the cost of solar-powered homes and advancing solar technology.

How and where do art and science - two seemingly disparate disciplines of intellectual inquiry - overlap? And, at that confluence, what can practitioners of both disciplines learn to expand their unique fields of knowledge and to affect consciousness?

SOFAlab’s keynote speaker, Tod Machover - Professor of Music and Media at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Media Lab, the inventor of Hyperinstruments, a trained-Juilliard musician, and, the man Los Angeles Times deemed, “America’s Most Wired Composer” - will bring his boundless knowledge of creative technology to the discussion. With each of Machover’s innovations, such as his Hyperinstruments, Hyperscore, Brain Opera, Toy Symphony and MMH (Music, Mind and Health), he has intentionally explored the space where science and art collide and in doing so challenged traditional perceptions of both fields.

Expanding the discussion further, SOFAlab’s panelists will include Maria Barbosa, Professor of Biology and a DC-based installation artist, Ernesto Barreto, Associate Professor in the Department of Physics & Astronomy and the Krasnow Institute for Advanced Study at George Mason University, and Brandon Morse, Professor of Digital Media at the University of Maryland and a DC-based video installation artist specializing in 3-D environments and animation software.

Funding was provided by the Center for Consciousness and Transformation, George Mason University, with support from Hamiltonian Artists, Smith Farm Center for Healing and the Arts, and the School of Art, George Mason University.

will expand the tour in a variety of ways to raise more money for the charities DCCA supports. Join in, meet your neighbors and help shape this exciting event by contributing your time, talents and ideas: Contact House Tour Chair, Robin Diener.

There’s still time to volunteer for the 2009 House Tour on Sunday October 18. Volunteers are needed as house monitors and to assist with Afternoon Tea at the Washington Club. Through this yearly festival, the Commission exposes District residents to a wide array of folk and traditional music and dance from around the world alongside workshops. Some genres include hip-hop, salsa, swing, tango and many more. Performances and interactive workshops (first come, first served) will be FREE to the public over three-days.

A Bollywood Experience, will be held at the Atlas Performing Arts Theater.

This night captures the essence of Bollywood fusing Hindu and Western dance expressions. Closing the weekend will be East Meets West at the Heritage Center at The Navy Memorial, in Downtown, DC. An explosive performance blends the massive moves of West Africa with the rich tradition of the Middle East. Ending this show, there will be a special dance tribute to the late, Michael Jackson.

25 to Stay Alive is Casey Trees’ tree watering and care slogan launched alongside its new Water By-Cycle program.

Trees require 25 gallons of water - approximately 1.5 inches of rainfall - per week to survive. In times of little or no rainfall, and especially during the hot summer months, trees need your help in getting the 25 gallons of water per week.

Watering trees on and surrounding your property is truly a small investment with a high return. Healthy trees provide cooling shade, help lower utility bills, increase property values, make neighborhoods more livable, and are less likely to fall on your house or car during a storm.

How to Water Trees:

Watering trees is easy and requires little time. It is even easier, faster and more effective when done properly and using a few tricks of the trade.

Trees need to be watered slowly. This prevents wasteful runoff and allows for the soil and roots to absorb the water. You can do this multiple ways.

• Add mulch- shredded bark or leaf compost works best. Use the 3-3-3 Rule to apply - 3 inches of much in a 3 foot ring with a 3 inch space around the tree trunk.
• Turn a hose on low for 1/2 hour.
• Place a 5-gallon bucket with holes in the bottom at the base of your tree. Fill the bucket up 5 days a week.
• Add a 25-gallon OozeTube® or Gator Bag to the base of your tree. Fill it up just once a week.

Ooze Tubes and Gator Bags are inexpensive and can be purchased from most nursery, hardware, and home improvement stores. Each takes less than five minutes to install. Casey trees even filmed a How to Install and Fill an OozeTube® video to help you out. Check it out:

The Library of Congress has begun sharing content from its vast video and audio collections on the YouTube and Apple iTunes Web services as part of a continuing initiative to make its materials more widely accessible.

New channels on the video and podcasting services are devoted to library content, including 100-year-old films from the Thomas Edison studio, book talks with authors, early industrial films from Westinghouse factories, first-person audio accounts of life in slavery and inside looks into the library's holdings, including the rough draft of the Declaration of Independence and the contents of Lincoln's pockets on the night of his assassination.

The General Services Administration also announced agreements with Flickr, YouTube, Vimeo and Blip.tv that will allow other federal agencies to participate in new media while meeting legal requirements.

The library began a pilot project with the Flickr photo-sharing service last year, loading 3,100 historic photos to start and 50 photos each week. The library maintains an online collection of more than 1 million prints and photos at http://www.loc.gov.

1841 16th Street to be Stabilized and Renovated

Dupont Circle Conservancy President, Rick Busch, reports that DC Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs is in the process of issuing a contract to stabilize the structure at 1841 Sixteenth Street, NW. Previously, DCRA had considered demolishing the historic home due to safety issues resulting from many years of neglect. Neighborhood activists and preservation groups rallied to save the structure, appealing to city councilmembers and agencies to prevent demolition. In an email to concerned community members, Mr. Busch wrote that Linda Argo, Director of DCRA, has been authorized by the owner’s attorney to convey to the neighborhood that it is the owner’s intention to renovate the interior of 1841 and restore its exterior. According to Mr. Busch, "DCRA is moving very quickly with the contract, with work possibly beginning on Thursday of this week (6/25)."

Mr. Busch said that Ms. Argo indicated that the DCRA contracted work will take approximately five weeks to complete. "The fact that DCRA is working to create a contractual obligation to stabilize the building means that work will start quickly, instead of being delayed waiting for the owner to find her own stabilization contractor, " Mr. Busch wrote. "The cost will be approximately $225 K, which will be charged to the owner."

Activists Rally Against City's Plan to Reward “Demolition by Neglect” in Dupont

“Worst Case We’ve Seen in Years” says Conservancy President

Preservation activists and neighbors alike are fuming as a city agency appears to be moving to reward what they term the worst case of “demolition by neglect” in years.

Senior city officials have met with nearby residents and Conservancy members and indicated that the former residence may have to be demolished because its deteriorated state makes it a threat to public safety, said Rick Busch, president of the Dupont Circle Conservancy. “Immediately adjacent neighbors would be forced to relocate at their own expense,” Busch said.

The situation revolves around 1841 16th Street, NW, at the corner of 16th and T, in the heart of a designated historic district. After what tenants and neighbors alike term severe neglect by owners, the building suffered internal wall collapses in June of 2008. Tenants fled the property at the urging of the DC Fire Department and city inspectors.

The building is owned by Amy Mazur, a professor at George Washington University, According to DC Office of Tax & Revenue on-line records, Mazur lives at 3445 Newark Street, NW, in her own $2 million plus home. City records also reveal that Mazur did not have the proper permit to run the troubled building as an apartment house. - Read more -
